What is a TENS Unit?

TENS is a short way of saying Transcutaneous Electronic Nerve Stimulation. It is a small machine
utilizing electrodes to help alleviate pain, whether acute or chronic. For some chronic pain patients, a
TENS unit can provide pain relief that can last for hours. It may also help reduce the amount of pain
medications needed. Many patients place the unit onto the belt to turn it on/off as often as needed.

Why should I have a TENS Unit?

Any person who suffers from chronic pain is a prime candidate for a TENS unit. Although
receiving continuing care from your doctor is a great thing, your doctor may not be on call every minute
of the day. When dealing with acute/chronic pain, please discuss with your doctor the necessity of
having a TENS Unit to help alleviate pain.

How does the TENS Unit Control Pain?

Sticky electrodes that attach to your skin while small electrical impulses are delivered
to underlying nerve fibers. This causes one of two things to occur. The first is the release of endorphins,
which are natural chemicals to relieve pain. The second thing to occur is that the electrical impulses can
actually block the pain signals from reaching the brain.

Is it safe?

TENS Units are extremely safe and have been available and used for over 30 years in the USA.
These units do not fix the problem area; however they can bring significant pain relief when applied
properly. Some patients have reported their skin to be slightly red after the pads are taken off. This can
be corrected by using new pads. Please seek the advice from your doctor before using this unit.

How do I use a TENS Unit?

Please follow the directions from your doctor who prescribed this unit for you. Do not attempt
to change the settings or use it without proper instructions.
